Some Default settings in the messenger service reveal a lot about you and your privacy to the outside world in an emergency. Therefore, you should pay attention to certain things. Here are the top three changes you should make:

• Set who can see your profile picture – all or just your contacts: To change this, go to the settings and go to “Account and data protection”. There you select the “Profile picture” item and have three options: “Everyone”, “My contacts” or “Nobody”. You should definitely not choose “everyone”. The decision should fall between “My Contacts” and “Nobody”. If you only have friends among your contacts, then “My contacts” will suffice.
• Turn off read receipts – so others don’t see when you’ve read messages: If you don’t want to send a read receipt, go to the settings, then to “Account”, click on “Privacy” and deselect that a read receipt should be sent. This means that blue ticks no longer appear for the recipient. Disadvantage: You will then no longer receive any reading confirmations.
• Turn off the feature that lets others see when you were last online: Under Settings, Account and Privacy you will find the item “Last seen”. Also set from “Everyone” to “My Contacts” or “Nobody”. We also recommend choosing “Nobody” in the item.
