You need to throw away this favorite cheese immediately. It was selling for tons, but they found something horrible in it. This is beyond all limits

The quality of food in the Czech Republic is constantly decreasing, both declared and required. Simply put, the food sold must at least be safe to appear on the shelves. However, it is happening more and more often that retail chains no longer fulfill even that and cheerfully put expired or moldy products on the shelves.

A very popular product

Last time it was done by Lidl, which is one of the most frequent offenders in this respect and should probably get a proper fine by now to be careful. During its inspections, the State Agricultural and Food Inspectorate found the popular moldy edam cheese in the Lidl store in Pardubice.

The food did not have an expired minimum durability date,” stated the SZPI inspectors in their reporting, which is all the more disturbing. Molding thus occurred despite the fact that the product was still within the period when it should be possible to consume it safely. It does not have to be a single incident and it can also affect the entire batch, for example due to errors in the production process.

It is Eidam cheese from Lidl’s private label Pilos, which is sold in 200 gram packs and has a best before date of November 26, 2023. It was produced in Germany by Milchwerke Oberfranken West.

Manufacturing defect

The inspectors themselves stated that the mold was not only found in one package. “In some of the inspected packages, mold colonies were present on the surface of the cheese under the intact packaging. Food is not considered safe if it shows signs of spoilage,” reports SZPI.

For the sake of completeness, they then add that during the inspection, inappropriate storage in unsuitable temperature conditions was not detected. So it is indeed possible that the problem was already in production. But in no case should you consume such cheese.

In general, foods that are handled more/frequently during the production process may be more susceptible to microbial contamination, e.g. from hands or utensils and equipment used in product processing, e.g. contact with a contaminated surface,” the State Agricultural and Food Inspection commented on the matter.
