The president of La Liga assures that Barcelona enter “like the greats of the Premier League”
MADRID, December 23 (PRESS EUROPE) –
La Liga president Javier Tebas has asked Barcelona president Joan Laporta to find out “before splitting” after the latter’s statements on the television cast and the comparison with the English Premier League.
“Dear Joan Laporta, I give you the data on the television distribution of Barcelona, compared to the Premier League clubs. You are perfectly competitive. LaLiga earns less and you are like the greats of the Premier League. You must find out before we split,” he wrote Thebes on his Twitter account.
A request that comes after Laporta assured in this week’s Christmas meeting with the media that the Premier League has earned much more money than La Liga and that the Blaugrana club could not compete against them in that regard.
“The Premier League will go from 5,000 to 7,000 million investments and we cannot compete in La Liga with the Premier League teams, because they have more resources and this must change,” said Laporta.
Now Thebes publishes income. The six clubs in Europe that entered the most for TV rights in the past 2021-22 season are from the Premier League (Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United).
City entered €176m (6 percent of the Premier League’s total), for Liverpool’s €174.6m. The leading Spanish club is Real Madrid, the seventh that earned the most with 160.8 million euros, while Barça is the eighth, immediately behind its great rival, with 160.1 million (10.1 percent of La Liga, in both cases).
Of the 22 clubs that entered the most TV rights in the last year, 12 (more than half) are from the Premier League, just 3 from La Liga (Atlético de Madrid earned 130.3 million, 15th on that list).
