You may need to lower your expectations for next-generation graphics.

Recently there was a demonstration of gameplay for Xbox Series X, but the public was only disappointed. For the most part, this was because this show, which was unveiled as the world’s first look at the next-generation gameplay, was, well, a little unsatisfactory.

Therefore, I have some sad news for you: if you hope to see a graphic leap along with the leaps of previous generations of consoles, lower your expectations.

Games on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will definitely be more beautiful than games on this generation of consoles, and I’m sure that any games that Microsoft and Sony are preparing will be crazy. But we must also be prepared for the fact that most of the next-generation games that will be presented over the next few months are likely to be similar to the games of the current generation. At least at first glance.

When it comes to obvious improvements, the development of game graphics has now slowed down a bit – especially when it is shown in an E3-style trailer in which players are used to seeing the most refined, unrealistically embellished version of the game. The presented 12 teraflops of the Series X GPU are not only improved graphics, but also improved simulation. Advanced lighting, hair physics, water simulation and many other little things that work in real time. It will be great, but in a more sophisticated form than we used to expect. The extra polygons and textures with higher resolution that accompanied the races of previous generations make the transition to Next Gen noticeable – especially when games can already do pretty impressive things with lighting right now.

In addition, since the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X use 4K intergeneration resolution, the PS5 and Series X will not be able to immediately hit you more. Even despite the fact that 8K is today a little more than a fashionable marketing word. Also, the additional power of these new consoles will significantly increase the frame rate, and this is very cool, but it is absolutely impossible to transfer in the trailer. Sure, there are graphical improvements, but they are almost invisible.

However, not only these updates will be difficult to notice. The current bar is set incredibly high. The modern generation still looks incredible. PCs with RTX graphics cards gave us an idea of what the next generation might look like, more than a year ago, but even if you do not take this into account, of course, the last year of the current console generation is the most impressive in terms of graphics. If you believe last year’s E3 demo, Cyberpunk2077 will be a stunningly beautiful game, and even in 2018 Red Dead Redemption 2 created landscapes with lighting that, I sincerely thought, was impossible with modern technology.

Summarizing all this, for the next generation of games that are currently being announced, it will be a difficult task to surpass the graphic skill of those that are already known to appear this year. Moreover, the games coming out immediately with the next generation, for the most part, will have to correspond to the systems of the current generation, and the developers still did not have enough time to study the capabilities of this new technology. And I’m sure that they will only get better – this generation has proven that developers will only eventually learn how to squeeze their iron out as much as possible.

For the first time in the history of video games, the best graphics are not the most important thing and not what deserves attention when the new console is released, with the exception of Nintendo, which a few years ago ceased to give priority to graphic power. Instead, we should be delighted with internal updates, such as fast loading times of embedded SSDs. It is difficult to show their capabilities in the trailer, but they will significantly improve the quality of next-generation games than improved hair physics. I can’t but note how pleased I am that we will probably no longer see loading screens disguised as slow door opening or something like that.

There are many reasons why you should rejoice at the improvements that the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will bring, but “Oh my god! It looks incredible! ”May not happen at startup. Again, Microsoft and Sony are likely to prove that I am wrong by announcing first-class games, but these insanely sophisticated, “designed-exclusive-for-this-console” examples will be the exception rather than the rule.

Therefore, do not expect “new generation gameplay” to mean something unbelievable that you have never seen before. Most likely, it will be something very similar to what you have already seen, but with a lot of subtle improvements that are difficult to truly appreciate until you sit down and experience them yourself. The end of this year will look very familiar, but that does not mean that it will not be extremely exciting.

In the meantime, we are constantly in search of something new and are also trying to improve ourselves! Good luck to all!
