Video games use various methods to prevent players from exploring beyond the boundaries of the map, sometimes with varying degrees of subtlety.

Do not cross the limits

Will all video games have to become des open worlds ? It’s a difficult question to answer, but triple-A games have already adopted this approach as a main selling point. Tallermore interactive, more realistic… it has almost become a marketing motto. Everyone is getting into it, even “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth”, after an episode in which had received strong criticism because of its corridor. Same thing for God of War.

Yet open worlds have become synonymous with almost limitless freedom for players. Iconic titles like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and “Grand Theft Auto V” have demonstrated this potential and created rich, living universes, where every corner holds secrets and unexpected adventures. The problem is that as maps get bigger, they still have to set boundaries in the end, because the capacity of consoles is not infinite. In this case, developers are doubling their imagination to prevent players from going beyond the limits of the adventure, but some choices are really questionable.

An illogical trick

To prevent players from leaving the map, developers use several methods. Some are more immersive than others, as in the first episodes of the saga “ Assassin’s Creed “, where the Animus informed the hero that information about the surrounding areas was missing due to lack of information and memories. “Breath of the Wild” opted to place natural barriers, with mountains and cliffs that even Link’s endurance cannot overcome.

Sometimes it’s much more down-to-earth: the game simply explains that you can’t go any further, and you’re either teleported or confronted to an invisible wall. However, there are times when studios don’t bother and use less creative solutions. Final Fantasy XVI chose this option and players can’t believe it.

While Clive can jump long distances, he remains unable to cross this barrier to go further on the pont half-destroyed. This is obviously a trick to limit progression, accompanied by the message “We need this bridge repaired”, but it doesn’t convince players. “FF7 Remake did this too — Cloud is stuck in Hojo’s lab? He tries to cut through a security door, but can’t. But when he fights Sephiroth at the end of the game, he cuts down entire buildings“, notes one user. “JRPG logic,” he continues. On Reddit, the examples are increasingly absurd, but a few users point out that it’s at least realistic. “People who try to go through damaged structures in real life end up in the news for dying in a bridge collapse. The structure is compromised“, says one comment.
