Meanwhile, speculation is buzzing about who created the monolith and when exactly it was placed in the Utah desert. Initially, some pointed in the direction of John McCracken, a California artist who had a penchant for science fiction and died in 2011.
Art dealer David Zwirner who manages his estate first said it was an authentic work by McCracken, but later retracted that statement, saying he had no idea who created the monolith. Almine Rech, who represents McCracken in her galleries in Paris and Brussels, also denies that this is one of his works.
