Apple wants your iPhone to be able to unlock all kinds of things, from your house to your car, other gadgets, and even hotel rooms. While some users are already able to unlock cars using an iPhone for supported cars, and using a HomeKit door lock, Apple users can also unlock their homes from the Apple Watch or their iPhone. Today, Apple is starting to take charge of hotel room keys. In collaboration with Hyatt in
In six places, Apple has allowed iPhones to unlock people’s hotel rooms.
Apple has said it will add more hotels around the world soon. Unlocking hotel rooms through iPhones works with a digital key that serves two purposes. First of all, there is no longer a need to carry a magnetic card, and second, you will no longer need to wait in the hotel lobby since you will be able to check in from your iPhone. This feature currently only works on the World of Hyatt mobile app. After a user makes a reservation, they’re asked if they want to add the reservation to the Apple Wallet app.
Users can add the key immediately after booking, but it will not be activated until check-in. Once the reservation is added, users will also be able to see all of the reservation details, such as the reservation number, in the Apple Wallet app.
The new feature only works with the latest version of iOS and Apple WatchOS, and only works with an Apple ID signed in to iCloud with two-factor authentication enabled. Let’s see how to add a hotel room key to your Apple Wallet:
- Open the hotel or resort app and sign in to your account. Currently, only the World of Hyatt app works with this feature.
- Open your reservation
- Tap “Add to Apple Wallet”.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to add your hotel room key.
