With the arrival of a number of small mini-EVs, there is more and more to choose for a smaller electrical budget. We select the four best electric cars that will cost € 30,000 or less in 2021.

Renault has been supplying the Twingo ZE since this month, but Fiat has also announced a much cheaper version of their brand new 500e. What are the four best electric cars you can buy with a ‘modest’ wallet next year?

De Fiat 500e is the style icon from this list. At the same time, the little Italian has of course always been a car for the general public. The first La Prima version is not, with a starting price above € 33,000. However, Fiat recently announced a second battery variant, which easily falls below € 30,000. It almost halved the battery from that version and added a low equipment level (Action), allowing entry for just under 25 grand. Then you do get halogen headlights and steel wheels with hubcaps. You have to use your telephone as an information system, because it is missing in the interior. What you do get is that now iconic and stylish appearance of the all-new electric 500. That makes it desirable even as this Action variant.

We thought for a long time that it wouldn’t come, but suddenly Renault announced it: the electric Twingo ZE It is the cheapest EV you can buy today, because you can get in for just over 20 grand. Then you do not drive in an attractive version, because then a multimedia screen and air conditioning are missing. For about € 23,000 you have a version with sufficient options, which has some pros and cons. The electric Twingo is smooth, dynamic and perfect for the city. If you drive a little more kilometers, it turns out that it has a somewhat limited range. Fast charging is therefore not included, but the little Frenchman can consume a maximum of 22 kW at a public charging station. That’s positive again. Dacia Spring
- 26.8 kWh battery
- 30 kW DC-laden
- 6,6 kW AC-laden

- 0-100 km / h in 15 seconds
- Price: € 17,500 (expected)
- In the market: Q3 2021
Next year However, the Twingo will lose the title of ‘Cheapest electric car’. Special, because the Dacia Spring is a group member. Renault already supplies this car under a different name in China, but will also find its way to our continent next year. The mischievous A-segment electric SUV will already appear in the second quarter, but will only be available for taxi companies and car-sharing concepts. The model will appear in the showroom in the fall of 2021, for an expected starting price of around € 17,500. Its performance is far from groundbreaking, but the Spring, in combination with the low price tag, is probably very attractive to a large group of people. Guaranteed success?
Volkswagen ID.3 Pure
- 48 kWh battery
- 50 kW DC-laden
- 7,2 kW AC-laden
- 330 km range according to WLTP
- 126 pk (93 kW)/225 Nm

- On the market: Q2 2021
It is the electric car of 2020: the Volkswagen ID.3. The first ID. Model from Wolfsburg is now only available with a minimum of 204 hp and a large battery of 58 kWh. For that version you will lose at least € 37,990. If you wait a little longer, you can drive a much cheaper variant in 2021. Then the ID.3 Pure appears. It has less power, a smaller battery and therefore a much lower price. There is not yet a definitive price tag, but Volkswagen has been talking about € 30,000 for some time. That makes the ID.3 suddenly very affordable and interesting, when you consider that many smaller electric cars such as the Renault Zoe or Mini Electric are a bit more expensive. The ID.3 promises an interior space comparable to that of a large Passat. You can read whether that is the case in the current Autovisie Magazine, in which we subject the Volkswagen ID.3 to our strict test.
