Samsung is celebrating great success with its flexible smartphones, with the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in South Korea best selling phone last quarter and his larger colleague Galaxy Z Fold 3 ranks 4th in the same ranking. It is no wonder that Samsung has big plans for flexible smartphones in the future, which will probably include other types of devices than we know so far.
Galaxy Z Fold with two joints?
In June of this year, Samsung filed a patent application with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) for a new type of two-joint folding device. A few days ago, the application was published, including several visual concepts showing what such a device should look like.
It should be noted that Samsung thinks quite a bit in depth, the diagram clearly shows where the components should be – batteries, motherboards, a module with three cameras or cable connections and antennas. The design also reveals the presence of a sub-display fingerprint reader and the location of the USB and HDMI connectors. Yes, you hear me right, Samsung even counts on HDMI connectivity similar to Sony in its premium photomobiles.
By folding the phone more than twice, there would be no need to fit it with a secondary display, as the visible third of the folding panel would play the role of an “external” display. Even so, Samsung mentions “Rear sub-display” in the drawing, which will probably only be a bar that serves as a viewfinder for the main camera in portrait mode. We do not see the selfie camera in the folding display; as with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, it may be hiding directly below the display.
When closed, the phone looks like three smartphones stacked on top of each other in the drawings, which probably won’t be very comfortable in your pocket. It will also be necessary to pay increased attention to the display, as part of the flexible will be exposed to the world.
It is still premature to speculate on whether and when Samsung will introduce this type of device. However, similar devices are reportedly being prepared by other brands, especially Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Huawei, so Samsung should not delay too much.
