Viktor Hovland (24) scored nine birdies on day three of the PGA Tour in Mexico. With that, the Norwegian leads the tournament with two strokes before the last and decisive day.

– You become completely dumb. I’m totally put off by that golf here. Absolutely wild, said commentator and former PGA pro Henrik Bjørnstad on Discovery +’s broadcast.
Viktor Hovland won last year’s edition of the PGA Tour tournament in Mayakoba, Mexico, and now he is set to repeat last year’s feat.
After nine birdies and a 62-lap on the third day of the tournament, which is a new best record for the Norwegian, he leads with two strokes down to Talor Gooch and three strokes down to Justin Thomas.
– I obviously had a good start. And it was nice to have one of those rounds where you can keep going all day, instead of maybe slowing down towards the end, where there is a tough hole, Hovland told the PGA after the round.
Hovland opened the birdie account on hole 2, and followed up with new birdies on holes 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 13, 17 and 18. The Norwegian finished the third day nine strokes under par for the day and a total of 19 strokes under par for the tournament .
Hovland’s previous best record was a 63-round from the Travelers Championship in 2020 and just the third round in Mexico last year.
After his round, the Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri thought that the Norwegian could hit as low as 59 strokes. The Norwegian was not entirely sure, even after the new best listing.
– It is hard to say. I got the most out of my game today, Hovland concluded.
Golf expert Henrik Bjørnstad was in any case very impressed with the 24-year-old’s round.
– It is perhaps the most impressive round so far in his professional career, commented Henrik Bjørnstad on Discovery +.
The final day will be broadcast on Sunday on Eurosport 1 and Golf TV from 20.00.
There, the Norwegian goes out with, among others, Justin Thomas, who has 14 victories on the PGA Tour.
– He is a fantastic player and I expect nothing less than that he will play well tomorrow. I have to play some of my best golf, I will have the chance to win, Hovland answered questions about tomorrow.
PS! Viktor Hovland’s three lowest rounds on the PGA Tour:
- 63 strokes, the opening round of the Travelers Championship in 2020.
