Following is UN Secretary-General António Guterres‘ message of solidarity with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon:
Dear UNIFIL colleagues,
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of speaking with representatives of your respective countries here in New York. Today I want to speak directly to you.
I want to tell you what I told them: I am filled with admiration and gratitude for the women and men who make up UNIFIL. I am proud of you – and I know your countries are too.
Please know that here in New York we are all very aware of the bravery you have shown in one of the most difficult moments in the history of UNIFIL. I have been very clear on this: the safety of UN personnel is our top priority.
All parties have an obligation to ensure the safety of our staff. The inviolability of United Nations premises must be respected at all times.
The attacks targeting peacekeepers are completely unacceptable. They are contrary to international law and international humanitarian law and may constitute a war crime.
Despite all these difficulties, UNIFIL holds its positions. Every day, you fly the blue flag – and guarantee the primacy of international law. I am in constant contact with General Lázaro to monitor developments in the situation.
Our path forward is clear. We need an immediate ceasefire and full implementation of Resolution 1701. The men and women of UNIFIL are working tirelessly to give our diplomatic efforts a chance to succeed.
You are not just on the Blue Line in Lebanon, you are literally on the front line of peace. Thank you for your service.
