Prague / Ostrava Hour to hour. So suddenly the hygienic station in the Moravian-Silesian Region decided to tighten the measures, which led to stricter rules for wearing veils and especially the restriction of mass events or the operation of restaurants. The sudden restrictions provoked a wave of resistance not only among the opposition, which is demanding the resignation of the Minister of Health, Adam Vojtěch (ANO), but also among the inhabitants of the region.
New restrictions in the Moravian-Silesian Region. Veils are returning to public transport and indoor spaces, events for more than 100 people are not allowed |
They expressed their disagreement with the inscriptions in front of the building of the Regional Hygiene Station of the Moravian-Silesian Region in Ostrava. As former MP Pavel Drobil (ODS) pointed out on his Twitter, the inscriptions ‘Chaos’, ‘You are not gods’, ‘About us without us’ and others appeared on the sidewalk before the weekend. “Vox was populated before the regional hygiene in Ostrava,” Drobil commented on the situation.

According to Minister Vojtěch, it is the Regional Hygiene Station in the Moravian-Silesian Region that is behind the stricter measures, which came into force immediately and without prior warning. He is sorry for the procedure of the hygienists. “The measures are clearly the right ones, but there should have been some time before the effectiveness to prepare local citizens, restaurant operators and event organizers for the changes,” he said on his Twitter account.
“I very much apologize to the citizens of the whole region for this not happening. I have already criticized the director and instructed all KHS directors to better communicate the implementation of measures in their region, “added the Minister. According to him, the measures could apply only from midnight, for example.
At Friday’s press conference, the Moravian-Silesian Regional Hygienist Pavla Svrčinová, when asked whether the measures had to be introduced so suddenly, stated that she had discussed the situation with the Minister of Health and there was a clear demand to introduce them as soon as possible. “I discussed it with the Minister and there was really a request as soon as possible,” she told reporters. Vojtěch stated that the regional hygienists informed the ministry about their plan to order restrictions in the whole region two days ago.
Epidemiologist Rastislav Maďar commented on the situation, saying that new measures were not taken due to the spread of coronavirus from the Ostrava-Karviná mines, but due to new outbreaks in private companies outside Karviná, where foreign workers are often employed with positive results for covid-19. According to the Hungarian, they are in contact with the local population, which can lead to the risk of community spread.
‘I am nothing, I am the Minister’
Vojtěch does not intend to resign. The order of restrictions with immediate effect was not happy, says the Minister of Hygiene |
The opposition immediately began to hear voices calling for the resignation of both Minister Vojtěch and hygienist Svrčinová. “Minister of Health Vojtěch is making fools of people in the Moravian-Silesian region. Everything was under control, the situation was constantly improving, critics do not understand anything. The result is immediate bans and restrictions throughout the region. Instead of leaving office, he only claims in an alibi: I am nothing, I am a minister, “said the chairman of the ODS parliamentary club, Zbyněk Stanjura.
Herbert Pavera (TOP09) also joined the minister’s criticism, according to whom “the minister obviously has a big hammer rather than clever data.”
“The government intervenes with a cross after the funus. Last week we convened an extraordinary meeting because of Karviná. We wanted the government to pay more attention to this situation. She claimed that she has it under control that we are making unnecessary political hype, “said Marian Jurečka, chairman of the KDU-ČSL party, for Czech Television. In recent days, the Minister and the hygienist have stated that the situation in the Karviná region has stabilized and is improving.

The Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region, Ivo Vondrák, announced on Twitter that he would convene the Regional Council on Monday and will demand a justification for all issued measures.
End of NeFestival: Another blow for the organizers of the Colors of Ostrava festival
The organizers of mass events are among those who have been fundamentally affected by the restrictions. At the time of tightening the rules, the NeFestival took place in Ostrava, which has been organized by the organizing team of the canceled Colors of Ostrava festival since Wednesday. He was forced to quit due to new regulations.
“We were canceled by the regional hygiene station. Because three more patients were added to Ostrava. Nobody warned us. I consider such a brutal intervention incomprehensible for purely preventive reasons, “said festival director Zlata Holušová. She added that she does not understand why people can go to the zoo indefinitely, where they are in the fresh air, but they cannot go to a concert that is outside and in an area that allows sufficient distance. “In this state, culture comes last,” she said.
At the beginning of this year, we, the organizers of cultural and other public events, were forced to take new and unexpected measures in connection with the coronavirus pandemic.
We approached them with humility and canceled long-prepared projects, even though their preparation cost us a huge amount of energy, work and, of course, money. Although it was painful for all of us, we still tried to organize at least as little as the current regulations allowed us to do.
But now the situation …changed. The decision of the Regional Hygiene Station to cancel events in the Moravian-Silesian Region is devastating for all of us. Just as events in one region have been canceled minute by minute, they can be canceled anywhere else with immediate effect. This is alarming, in our opinion, because no responsible organizer can risk such a situation.

“If a festival is held in a region that has the worst epidemiological situation in the Czech Republic, then in that case there is a risk (cancellation),” said Minister of Health Vojtěch. “I am surprised that the festival is taking place and the organizers have not decided to postpone it at this time and in this region,” he added. According to him, however, there is a debate with the regional hygienists as to whether the regulations could not apply until midnight.
As Echo24 points out, NeFestival spokesman Jiří Sedlák only found out about the new restrictions from questions from journalists. The Klimovice Sanatorium is now solving complications, which expected the arrival of 200 clients, and measures to limit the number of people will also affect local water parks or swimming pools.
Regional hygiene decided to take measures due to the steady growth of the infection of new cases of covid-19 in the Moravian-Silesian Region. Veils in public transport and indoor areas will now be mandatory in the entire Moravian-Silesian Region. The event will be open to a maximum of 100 people, and cross-border workers will have to submit a negative test every two weeks.
Visits to hospitals and homes for the elderly will only be possible with a respirator. A maximum of one hundred people will be able to take part in the various events. Bars and restaurants will remain closed from 23:00 until 08:00. Cross-border workers will have to submit a negative PČR test every two weeks, the minister said.
Unfortunately, it is still true that the Moravian-Silesian Region is the most coronavirus-affected region of the Czech Republic. The measures have a single objective. Prevent its further spread and protect vulnerable groups such as the elderly and the sick or otherwise debilitated. https://t.co/8yYATaYHJ2
