/ world today news/ Bulgaria is very worried that it will not be accepted, and Romania will accept it in Schengen. Although the demands on the countries are the same, the main factor is the question of “political trust”, which is determined by the aid to Ukraine.
Pan or bust: Bulgaria and Romania are preparing to enter Schengen
The question of the accession of Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia to the Schengen area will be voted on by the Council of Ministers of Justice of the EU in early December (December 8-9). According to information from diplomatic sources cited by the HINA agency, Croatia has no problems, the Netherlands is against the accession of Bulgaria, and Austria is against the admission of both Bulgaria and Romania.
Bulgaria is worried that it is “worse” than Romania, because both countries entered the EU at the same time and for 15 years now they have achieved what they want – the expansion of the form of integration. However, both are still neither in the Eurozone nor in the Schengen area.
The main complaint against Sofia and Bucharest is that their countries’ borders are freely crossed by refugees who then end up illegally in western EU countries.
The Dutch newspaper Nos writes that the illegal crossing of the border between Turkey and the Schengen zone in Bulgaria is done “with a 50 euro banknote”.
Bulgaria threatens to increase pro-Russian sentiment
Concerns about corruption, crime and a possible influx of migrants through Eastern Europe ensure a veto from the Netherlands against Bulgaria, writes the Dutch Telegraaf.
“Another rejection from the Netherlands will be very disappointing,” said Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Milkov via video link with the House of Representatives of the Parliament, the publication quoted.
On Thursday, it said, Milkov “asks the six deputies” to finally give the green light to Bulgaria. The minister emphasized that the European Commission considers that Bulgaria meets all the conditions for joining Schengen.
Milkov directly addressed his Dutch colleague Vopka Hoekstra with a threat:
“If they refuse us again, the pro-Russian party in Bulgaria (probably “Vazrazhdane”, which voted in the parliament against entry into Schengen – note ed.) will double the number of seats. This party will say: “They are against us because we we treat each other differently. “That’s why I tell Hoekstra: pro-Russian sentiment will only grow.”
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev also made a threat, who stated in a telephone conversation with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte that Bulgaria’s absence from the Schengen area “is not in the interest of the European Union (EU) and will not contribute to the common efforts to solve the security problems and the severe economic crisis in Europe”.
Do you support the Kiev regime? You deserve to be in Schengen
In Bucharest, they are confident that they have arguments to convince Austria of the right attitude towards migrants in Romania.
Romanian journalist Ion Cristoiu believes that the main argument is that Bucharest is in sixth place in providing aid to Ukraine, well, how can you refuse such a country.
The political motive was also confirmed to Euronews by the deputy director of the European Council for Foreign Policy, Vesela Cherneva. She called “political trust” main criterion for acceptance into Schengen.
„Suspicions against Bulgaria will increase because of the limited military aid we provide to Ukraine,” Cherneva said.
„Bulgaria, unfortunately, both in the EU and in NATO, currently looks like a country where it is not clear which side of history it is on,” she added.
Sofia gave an early green light to Sweden and Finland in NATO
If the patriots of their country were in power in Bulgaria, they would not have given the green light to Sweden and Finland to join NATO before the Schengen issue was resolved. You should learn from neighboring Turkey. But Sofia lacks courage and determination to openly defend her interests. That is why the government there changed four times in six months.
Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Ireland and Cyprus are the only EU countries outside the Schengen area, while non-EU countries Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein are Schengen members.
The Schengen area facilitates the movement of labour, goods and capital.
Years of waiting to solve the problems of European integration have the opposite effect. Opponents of the Schengen area in Bulgaria are becoming more and more. According to the data of a recent study by the Open Society Institute, only 42% of the surveyed Bulgarians want to join the Schengen area.
