In 2004, Kobzon was diagnosed with oncological disease, he underwent surgery for the first time. In 2015, he received a visa to Italy for treatment, despite the EU sanctions, under which he became a member of the Duma after the annexation of Crimea to Russia. The last time he was hospitalized was this summer. At the beginning of August, he was discharged from the hospital.
Kobzon was born on September 11, 1937 in the Ukrainian USSR. In 1956, he completed his secondary education in the field of Exploratory Drilling at the Mining Technical College in Dnipropetrovsk, in the same year and until 1959 he served in the Soviet Army. During his service, he was invited to the Song and Dance Ensemble in the Transcaucasian Military District. In the late 1950s, he entered the Gnesin Institute (now the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music), but interrupted his studies, starting to appear on stage. He graduated from the institute only in the 70s.
In 1980 he received the title of People’s Artist of the RSFSR, in 1987 – People’s Artist of the USSR, and in 1991 – People’s Artist of Ukraine.
In 2003, Kobzon joined the United Russia party. He was a deputy without interruption from the Second to the Seventh State Duma. Since 2011, Kobzon has been the first deputy chairman of the Committee on Culture of the Duma.
