Yorgos Lanthimos Wins Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival 2023 with ‘Poor Things’ and Cailee Spaeny Awarded Best Actress for ‘Priscilla’

by Valerio Cappelli, sent to Venice

Golden Lion to Yorgos Lanthimos, with his female Frankestein. Best director to our Garrone, best actress Cailee Spaeny for «Priscilla»

The magic circle of awards closes with the victory of the great favorite who in thanksgiving remembers striking actors and screenwriters in Hollywood, and in the films makes us understand that not all the images and stories have been told. It’s the impertinent, bald but disheveled Greek, Yorgos Lanthimos, with his female version of Frankenstein in Poor Things. At the Lido he won the Grand Jury Prize in 2018 with The Favorite, in two weeks he turns 50, a nice way to celebrate.

Almost all predictions met. Matteo Garrone with Io Capitano takes home the third prize, as best director, and gets great applause; a second recognition for the revelation actor goes to his young Senegalese protagonist Seydou Sarr. Matteo, competing in Venice for the first time, had come from six participations in Cannes which, inexplicably, had closed its doors in his face this time. And now ironically he says: «Why, is there a festival in Cannes? I have splendid memories of the Lido, since I was 18 years old and I was a tennis coach, my student told me, look, there’s Nanni Moretti over there. I didn’t even see a movie. I returned at 27 with some friends in a beat-up van, we slept in the pine forest for three days and three days at the Excelsior.”

A Evil Does Not Exist by Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi wins the Grand Jury Prize: it is the short circuit of a poetic and rarefied journey into nature, between profiteering and building speculation by unscrupulous people. In the derby on migrants between Garrone and Agnieszka Holland, Matteo comes out on top as the most important prize: Special Jury Prize for his Green Border, on refugees stuck on the border between Poland and Belarus: «It wasn’t easy to make this film for several reasons, some you imagine, others you don’t. People are still hiding in the forest, in Europe we have the resources to have them but we don’t want them.”

Best actress, surprisingly (winning against Carey Mulligan for Maestro on Bernstein) is the 25-year-old Cailee Spaeny, for Sofia Coppola’s lifeless Priscilla, on Elvis’ young wife; as an actor Peter Saarsgard wins for Memory by Michel Franco, who reads a speech as long as an Egyptian papyrus, between artificial intelligence, humanitarianism and Catholicism, but this year almost everyone showed up with a soporific leaflet, and yes it’s about thanking stop. The screenplay was written by Pablo Larraín, in El Conde there is Pinochet as a tired vampire, besieged by the greed of his heir sons, more vampires than his father. Grotesque fresco, the Chilean dictator can be called a murderer, which he was, but if he is called a thief he goes mad. «A man who died in freedom and was rich. Impunity has made him eternal and what is better than a vampire to represent it?”. Micaela Ramazzotti (Happiness) won the audience award for Orizzonti extra. Italy has been missing the Golden Lion for 10 years (Gianfranco Rosi). Red carpet already rolled up, see you next time.
