The number of people employed in wholesale and retail fell by 104,000, the biggest decline since November 2011.

The construction industry also fell by 100,000 people. This is the largest decline ever since the revision to the 10th business classification in 2013.

By age, the number of employed people over 60 increased by 272,000, while the number of young people aged 15 to 29 decreased by 168,000 and those in their 40s decreased by 62,000.

The overall employment rate for those aged 15 and over was 63.3%, up 0.1%p from the same month last year, but the youth employment rate was 45.8%, down 0.7%p.

Accordingly, the government plans to prepare the second social movement development plan next month to promote the economic activities of vulnerable groups such as youth, women and middle-aged people.

Deputy Prime Minister Choi said, “We plan to improve the handling of skilled workers and expand employment training for young people to allow new workers to enter the construction industry,” and added, “We will we share a plan for consistency in delivery within this month.”
