Production disruption due to shortage of semiconductors… Tension in the auto industry
[뉴스리뷰]

Recently, there is news that global automakers are reducing or even stopping production.

It is not because demand has declined, but because semiconductors for automobiles are not being available.

The auto industry is tense because it is not a problem to be solved in a short time.

German Volkswagen, American Ford, and Japanese Toyota.

These are global companies that have decided to reduce or stop automobile production at some factories because they could not find semiconductors that go into their vehicles.

Korea’s GM Korea also decided to cut the production volume of the Bupyeong Plant 2, which makes Malibu, in half, due to the lack of automotive semiconductors.

Due to the corona 19 crisis last year, automakers predicted that demand would decrease, and reduced orders for automotive semiconductors.

Semiconductor companies have also tried to reduce production accordingly. As demand for automobiles recovers faster than expected, supply has not been able to keep up.

In fact, last year, the global automotive industry predicted that sales will decrease by more than 20%, but it has only declined by 15%, and car sales are also increasing rapidly this year.

The demand for electric vehicles that contain more semiconductors than conventional internal combustion engine cars has soared more than 40% last year, which is one factor in the supply and demand for automotive semiconductors.

Nor can we increase our supply right away.

The need to reorganize the production facilities of semiconductor factories, and above all, the low profitability of automotive semiconductors is an obstacle to the expansion of production.

“You have to make everything else and make this. Then it will take 3-6 months. Ordering and receiving it now.”

In the first quarter of this year, a production disruption of more than 670,000 vehicles will occur worldwide, and domestic automakers are paying close attention to whether the situation is prolonged.
