Yogyakarta’s M 5.2 Earthquake Causes Residents to Flee Their Homes

Residents scattered out of the house when earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 rocked southwest of Kulon Progo, DI Yogyakarta on Friday (17/3) evening.

Ahmad Mustaqim (32), a resident of Sentolo, Kulon Progo, admitted that he was in his house when the earthquake shook.

“Feeled (vibration) for 3-5 seconds, immediately left. Some neighbors also left the house,” said the private employee when contacted, Monday (17/3).

Syahru Mubarak (23), entrepreneur, a resident of Argorejo, Sedayu, felt a shock for about 3 seconds while relaxing on the terrace of his house.

“Back on the terrace of the house, suddenly the roof shook. I immediately opened the fence, traumatized by the Yogya earthquake (Bantul, 2006),” said Syahru when contacted.

An earthquake shook the Special Region of Yogyakarta on Friday (17/3) evening. Through the Twitter account @InfoBMKG, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) stated that the earthquake occurred at 19.05 WIB.

BMKG stated that the epicenter or epicenter of the earthquake was around 126 kilometers southwest of Kulon Progo, DI Yogyakarta. The hypocenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers. BMKG stated that the earthquake had no potential for a tsunami.
