Yogyakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Governor DIY who is also the King of the Yogyakarta Palace Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X responded to the proposal of the Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto who wanted to return the tomb of a national hero Prince Diponegoro to hometown.
Diponegoro who was the leader of the Java War against the Dutch (1825-1830), was buried in Makassar, South Sulawesi.
In the view of the Sultan, the repatriation of Prince Diponegoro to his hometown in Yogyakarta was unnecessary, because the people of Makassar also respect this hero whose real name is Bendara Raden Mas Antawirya.
“If I don’t have to, Prince Diponegoro is there [Makassar] also appreciated by the community,” said the Sultan in Yogyakarta, Friday (14/7).
“And the people in Makassar also take care of it, I don’t think it is necessary to send it to Jogja. The people appreciate it [Pangeran Diponegoro] there,” he added.
The proposal to move Prince Diponegoro’s grave from Makassar to his hometown was made by Prabowo while speaking at the All-Indonesia City Government Association (Apeksi) National Working Meeting, Thursday (14/7) evening.
“Here in this town [Makassar] there is also the tomb of Prince Diponegoro who was banished from his hometown. And, there’s nothing wrong with us thinking whether it’s not in the wild, of course with the permission of the people of South Sulawesi, is it not a good idea for us to return Prince Diponegoro’s grave to his hometown again, “Prabowo said while speaking at the podium of the Apex National Working Meeting in Makassar.
“We need to think about it,” said the man who is also the chairman of Gerindra.
For information, Prince Diponegoro, who fought against Dutch colonialism, was born with the name Bendara Raden Mas Antawirya on November 11, 1785 in Yogyakarta. He is the son of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono III and RA Mangkarawati.
Prince Diponegoro died in exile on January 8, 1855 at Fort Rotterdam, Makassar. The leader of the Java War (1825-1850), also known as the Diponegoro War, was buried in Makassar.
