BAD WEATHER: RED ALERT IN CALABRIA AND SICILY
Showers and thunderstorms, storms and storms in the South
The marked phase of bad weather continues which is affecting Sicily and Calabria in particular, with phenomena in partial extension in the next few hours in Puglia and Basilicata, especially in the relative southern and Ionian sectors. On the basis of the available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection in agreement with the regions involved – which are responsible for activating the civil protection systems in the territories concerned – has issued a further warning of adverse weather conditions which integrates and extends that disseminated in the past days. The weather phenomena, impacting on the different areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities which are reported, in a national summary, in the national criticality and alert bulletin which can be consulted on the Department’s website (http://www.protezionecivile.gov.it).
The notice foresees the persistence of intense precipitations, predominantly of a downpour or thunderstorm character, on Calabria, with particularly persistent phenomena on the Ionian sectors; from the early hours of Monday 25 October, precipitation is also expected, predominantly of a downpour or thunderstorm, in Basilicata, with more intense phenomena in the southern and Ionian sectors. The phenomena will be accompanied by strong showers, local hailstorms, frequent electrical activity and strong gusts of wind. The warning also provides for the persistence of gale force winds, with strong gusts of gale, south-east on Calabria, especially on the Ionian sectors. From the early morning of Monday 25 October, south-eastern gale winds, with strong gale gusts, will also affect Puglia and Basilicata, especially on the related ionic sectors. Intense storms expected along the exposed coasts.
It was assessed on the basis of the phenomena foreseen and in progress tomorrow red alert for hydraulic and hydrogeological risk on part of Calabria and Sicily. On Monday 25 October, the alert will be orange on the remaining sectors of the two regions and, due to the risk of storms, it will also cover part of Basilicata; yellow weather-hydro alert in Puglia and Basilicata. The meteorological and critical situation forecast for Italy is updated daily on the basis of new forecasts and the evolution of phenomena, and is available on the website of the Department of Civil Protection (http://www.protezionecivile.gov.it), together with the general rules of conduct to be followed in case of bad weather. The information on the regional alert levels, on the specific criticalities that could affect the individual territories and on the prevention actions adopted are managed by the territorial civil protection structures, in contact with which the Department will monitor the evolution of the situation.
