Novak Djokovic, indefatigable at the highest level, continues to capture all the craziest figures in the history of his sport.
Rafael Nadal, until Monday, was the one who had the most weeks as first or second in the ATP ranking. Novak Djokovic has just taken this record, one more, with a 597th week made official on Monday, which allows him to leave his Spanish colleague one week behind (596). For the two mastodons, this is almost twelve years of presence in one of these two first places! Roger Federer is not far behind, third with 528 weeks, but as always we now wonder how far “Djoko” will be able to push this unreal performance… He will go up to 599 for sure, since we will be in two weeks in the middle of the US Open.
Ten ATP titles for Connors, four for Federer
To realize, once again, the insane side of this statistic, know that the fourth Jimmy Connors reaches an already edifying total of 387 weeks within this top 2 of the world hierarchy – that is almost seven and a half years. Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras share the fifth place with 376 weeks.
Let’s remember that Novak Djokovic holds a good number of other tennis records, some of which are much more important, starting of course with the number of Grand Slam titles (24, ahead of Rafael Nadal’s 22) but also the most Masters (seven, ahead of Roger Federer’s six) and Masters 1000 (40, ahead of Rafael Nadal’s 36) as well as time spent as world number 1 (428 weeks, ahead of Roger Federer’s 310). The list, of course, is far from exhaustive, but we can still consider one last real big goal for the Serbian, now Olympic champion: that of the number of ATP titles in total, since he is ten lengths behind Jimmy Connors (109 against 99) and only four trophies behind Roger Federer (103).
