Yes sticker is on the rise: ’27 million kilos of paper have been saved’

“So, it can be taken off,” says Marlies about the no/yes sticker on her mailbox. Since 1 October, the letterbox sticker policy in its municipality of Ridderkerk has changed. No sticker means no unaddressed advertising. If you do want to receive advertising, stick a yes sticker on the letterbox. The no/no sticker retains the same function.

A total of fifteen municipalities, including four major cities, have introduced the yes sticker. A dozen more are planned to be introduced. Every municipality with the same goal: to prevent paper waste.

“At households where advertising comes through the bus, about 25 leaflets fall on the doormat every week. That is 30 kilos of advertising per year,” says spokesperson Mariska Joustra of Milieu Centraal. “Consumers should have freedom of choice, but let the most environmentally friendly choice be the standard.”

Marlies van Loghem from Ridderkerk no longer has a sticker, but is shocked by the number of yes stickers at her neighbors:
