Official Yerevan confirms that it has received recommendations from Russia regarding the process of Armenia’s ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). According to the Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Armenian side responded to the proposals of its Russian partners.
At the same time, the Foreign Ministry, in response to a request from Radio Azatutyun (the Armenian division of Radio Liberty – a foreign media outlet recognized in the Russian Federation as a foreign agent), did not specify what recommendations were being discussed.
The National Assembly of Armenia ratified the Rome Statute with 60 votes in favor early last month. After this, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Mikhail Galuzin stated that Moscow considers Yerevan’s move “absolutely unfriendly.” He also said that Moscow has presented certain proposals, “but, judging by the situation, Yerevan is either still thinking about them or has decided to abandon them.”
In this regard, “Radio Azatutyun” asked the Armenian Foreign Ministry “whether official Moscow really made any proposals, and if so, what were these proposals and why did Yerevan not accept them and respond to them?”
“In the context of the recommendations conveyed by the Russian side regarding the process of ratification of the Rome Statute by Armenia, the Armenian side made a proposal to conclude an appropriate bilateral agreement that could dispel the fears of the Russian Federation, regarding which no official written response from the Russian side was provided to the Armenian side,” says the foreign policy response departments.
Let us recall that on October 3, the Armenian parliament ratified the Rome Statute of the ICC. The Kremlin responded to this by indicating that this decision was reckless and additional questions would arise for the current leadership of Armenia. The Federation Council, in turn, called Yerevan’s move unfriendly and promising “legal enslavement” to the Transcaucasian republic.
