(Andong = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Seon-hyung = On the 21st, the Andong Branch Criminal Division of the Daegu District Court (Chief Judge Seung-woon Lee) sentenced Mayor Park Nam-seo of Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, who was indicted on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act, to 1 year and 6 months in prison and 3 years of probation.

Mayor Park was put on trial along with 13 co-defendants on charges of making phone calls to voters and providing tens of millions of won (violation of the Public Official Election Act, etc.) during the primary process held ahead of last year’s local elections. Previously, the prosecution asked the court to sentence Mayor Park to three years in prison.

The court said, “Mayor Park has a history of being criminally punished twice for election crimes, but he committed election crimes again,” and added, “He was a candidate who had ultimate responsibility for the primary and election process, and he was the person who benefited most directly from the crime in this case. “He said.

At the same time, he explained the reason for the sentencing, saying, “All responsibility is being passed on to other defendants who helped with the election, and the fact that the cell phone and SIM card were changed is also a very bad situation.”

Among the charges applied to Mayor Park by the prosecution, the court found him guilty only for violating the party’s primary election method according to mobile voting method instructions.

He was found not guilty on charges related to the use of corporate credit cards.

Mr. Kim, an official of a waste management company indicted along with Mayor Park, was sentenced to one year in prison and two years of probation, Mr. Lee, a campaign worker, was sentenced to one year in prison and two years of probation, and Mr. Park, the camp accounting manager, was sentenced to six months in prison and two years of probation. Sentenced to one year.

Six of the other co-defendants were each sentenced to a fine of 2 million to 5 million won.

If an elected public official is sentenced to a fine of 1 million won or more for violating the Public Official Election Act, his or her election will be invalidated.
