Yeondeunghoe, a national intangible cultural property and registered as a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage, is being held in downtown Seoul.

This year, it is said that it is similar to the scale before the spread of Corona 19.

Reporter Shin Sae-rom, where did the procession come from?

[기자]

Yes, the head of the procession, which started at Heunginjimun Gate about an hour ago, passed here in front of Tapgol Park about 10 minutes ago.

As the procession draws to a close, the festivities intensify.

As the sun goes down, the five-colored lanterns illuminate the Jongno area more brightly, and citizens gather all over the street to see the colorful lotus lanterns.

This lantern procession will be held on a scale similar to that in 2019, before the spread of COVID-19.

In 2020, when the corona started, the procession was canceled, and then it came to scale down.

This year, it’s literally a large-scale festival that goes through a long tunnel of corona and takes off the mask.

The Yeondeunghoe Preservation Committee estimated that about 50,000 people from 60 organizations across the country would participate, holding two lanterns per person.

After the lotus lantern procession, the Daedong Hanmadang will be held until late at night at the intersection of Jonggak Station in the middle of a rain of flowers.

There are also events scheduled for tomorrow.

Are there more opportunities to meet Yeon Deung?

[기자]

Yes, there must be some people who miss the annual lantern festival.

First of all, tomorrow (21st), from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m., a traditional culture and performance are scheduled on the road in front of Jogyesa Temple.

It is a street festival where you can enjoy traditional culture experiences and performances.

This is followed by a small procession from Jogyesa Temple to Insadong from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, where you can enjoy lotus lantern play once again.

In order to facilitate the event, the surrounding roads will be controlled today as well as tomorrow.

On April 8 of the lunar calendar, on the coming 27th, Buddha’s Birthday, temples across the country light up and celebrate the birth of Buddha.
