Yemeni Muazin Killed Because the Sound of Azan Was Considered a Sleep Disturbance

A muezzin in Yemen reportedly killed because of azan the dawn he recounted was considered a sleep disturbance.

The incident took place in the city of Taiz, southwest Yemen, on Tuesday (23/3) in the morning.

Sources in Taiz told Arabic -language news outlets, The New Arab, the man stabbed the muezzin of the Al-Rahma Mosque named Mahyoub Shamsan Al-Zaghrouri. The 70-year-old man is thought to have died on the spot.


News site Yaman Now identified the perpetrator as Mohammed Al-Zaidi. The source said the 35-year-old perpetrator lived not far from the Al-Rahma Mosque.

Yemeni security authorities say they have captured al-Zaidi. He was arrested at his home.

The perpetrator had refused to be arrested. He even tried to attack the officers with a machete.

Local sources said that the murder of a muezzin for performing the aloud call to prayer was unprecedented.

Recently there has been a campaign on social media complaining about the sound of the call to prayer, especially at dawn.

The current condition of Yemen itself is getting worse since the civil war between the Houthi rebels and the government broke out in 2015. As a result of the war, Yemen was hit by famine and a cholera outbreak from 2016 to 2020.

The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions. The United Nations has called the humanitarian crisis in Yemen the worst in the world.
