Yemen: The Houthis hit two ships in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean –

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for two attacks on merchant ships, causing only material damage to one of them, according to Britain’s maritime security agency UKMTO.

Houthi spokesman Yahya Shari said eleven ballistic missiles and two drones hit the Olympic Spirit, which he called an “American tanker”.

Earlier, the UKMTO reported that a ship was “hit by an unknown projectile” and “damaged” while sailing in the Red Sea. There was no fire and no casualties were reported. “The ship is heading to its next port,” he added. The British agency then announced that three more missiles had exploded near the ship. “The crew is safe and sound,” he stressed.

“The damage is small. The ship has some technical issues but is seaworthy and continues its course,” a source said.

According to marine insurance company Ambrey, it is a Liberian-flagged chemical tanker. It hit the bridge while 73 nautical miles southwest of Hodaida. The ship was en route from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Muscat, Oman.

The Houthis also claimed responsibility for a missile attack on the container ship St John sailing in the Indian Ocean “because its owner company violated the ban on access to ports in occupied Palestine.”

This information has not been confirmed by either UKMTO or Ambrey.
