Yemen’s Houthi rebels announced today that they had launched an attack on a merchant ship and two US cruisers in the Red Sea.

Their spokesman Yahya Sharia said the Houthis launched a ballistic missile attack on the container ship Contship Ono, which was sailing in the Red Sea.

It also claimed that two US Navy cruisers, identified as the USS Cole and Laboon, were targeted by missiles and drones. So far there is no confirmation from the US Central Command or CENTCOM.

Since last November, Iran-aligned Yemeni rebels have frequently launched missile and drone attacks against merchant ships in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, claiming they were acting in solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, after the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas. They initially said they were targeting ships linked to Israel, but later expanded their targets to include ships linked to the US and Britain, in retaliation for strikes against their positions in Yemen by forces from those countries.
