Yemen flood death toll rises to at least 60

(ANSA) – DUBAI, 19 AUGUST – At least 60 people have died in Yemen due to floods caused by torrential rains that have hit the country since the end of July, while 13 are still missing. The UN reported. Yemen, at war for almost a decade, is facing severe floods caused by torrential rains almost every year, while climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of rainfall. Since the end of July, floods have caused the death of 36 people in Hodeida province, 9 in Ibb, 8 in Marib and 7 in Taiz, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a report. At least 600 people were injured in Hodeida and Marib provinces alone, OCHA said, adding that a total of 13 people are still missing in Hodeida and Taiz. “Public infrastructure, including schools, roads and health facilities, have been affected,” the report continues. In total, according to the same source, 38,285 families have been affected, or almost 268,000 people, according to which “bad weather is expected to persist until September, with further warnings for heavy rains.” (ANSA).
