In a heartwarming display of nature’s preparations for winter, a sleepy black bear was recently captured on video gathering materials for its den before settling in for a long hibernation. The footage, shared by the Yellowstone Safari Company on saturday, offers a rare glimpse into the fascinating world of these majestic creatures.
“Have you ever seen a bear tuck themself in for thier winter hibernation?” guide Grant T. Johnson asked on Instagram, where the captivating video was posted.
Johnson and his group were fortunate to witness the bear emerging from its den on Friday. The bear was diligently collecting twigs and other debris to add extra insulation to its winter home.
“bears aren’t true hibernators, in the most technical sense of the term, but rather enter a state of torpor, or extreme inactivity, in the winter,” Johnson explained. “Still, it’s unusual to see them emerge from their dens at all onc they tuck in during autumn.”
With a touch of warmth, Johnson bid the bear farewell: “Sleep well, little buddy, and we’ll see you in the spring.”
According to Yellowstone national Park, most bears have settled into their dens by mid-November, even though some males may remain active until December before hibernating. Bears in the Greater Yellowstone area typically begin to emerge from their dens in early February, with most venturing out by early May. Male bears tend to leave their dens considerably earlier than females with cubs.
