Yellow code for heavy thunderstorms and persistent heat

It was the hottest so far in Hoek van Holland today, with 32.3 degrees. The tropical weather is slightly earlier in the year than normal: on average, the first occurs on July 4.

In Limburg, North Brabant, Zeeland, Overijssel, Utrecht, Gelderland and South Holland, code yellow applies tonight for thunderstorms. These can be accompanied locally by hail, wind gusts and a lot of precipitation.

The showers are moving into the country from the southwest. There is a chance that locally up to 40 millimeters of rain falls, which means that the chance of flooding is considerable.

Tomorrow morning there is still a chance of showers with thunder. In the afternoon there will be a few clearances. The temperature rises to 22 to 26 degrees, a lot less warm than today. After the weekend it first becomes hit and miss; it will be summer again around Wednesday.

Keep cool

Due to the persistent heat, the national Heat Plan is also active for the above provinces, at least until tomorrow morning. The elderly and people with a chronic condition, in particular, are advised to drink enough and to keep themselves and their homes cool.

The month of June is getting warmer and sunnier. The month has become 0.5 degrees warmer compared to the period 1981-2010. Compared to the climate period 1951-1980, June has even warmed 0.9 degrees.
