It’s almost time for the year’s first and biggest grocery sale, where more than a thousand new food items arrive in stores.
We’ve already had a few drops, like Erling Braut Haaland ice cream and Linnéa Myhre’s new Solo collaboration, which we expect will have legs to walk on – when they arrive in stores. There are still a few weeks to go, but some products have already crept onto store shelves.
The first product news we got hold of this year is perhaps also one of those that will divide people the most: Chips with the taste of dill pickles.
Of course we had to taste.
Expensive cucumbers lead to threats
In short, dill pickles are a type of pickle. The cucumber is obviously pickled with dill, but roughly speaking, this is a more salty and sour variant of the type of pickle that is most common here at home. Dill pickles are also made from medium-sized, often whole cucumbers, preferably cut into sticks instead of slices.
If you want to dive more into the pickle varieties, we can recommend Wikipedia for a decent overviewand the Daily Meal has a nice explanation of dill vs bread and butter pickles. The latter is the most common version in Norway.
On trend eller past
Pickles are the trend that never seems to end. Our Instagram and eventually TikTok feed has been haunted by the pickles, and the sheet they’re in, since long before the pandemic.
We mention in passing: pickle juice, or pickle juice, has long been in the trend picture, in countless ways. Pickleslush, picklebacks, pickle martinis, and pickle ice cream.
We must also never forget last year’s #hotpickle trend, which combines two strong trends (pun intended).

The editors went into this trial knowing that it would be impossible to reach a consensus here. For pickles are a classic love-hate food, although not as divisive as, for example, coriander or anchovies. Dill is also quite divisive, albeit not as markedly.
This bag of crisps courted the whole scale, here there were many gray areas, and as many opinions as there were people. It is easy to agree on what we taste, a little harder to agree on whether we like it.
The chip flakes are relatively small, thin and crispy, and have a slightly rustic appearance with some shell on the edge.
There is a clear smell of both dill and vinegar when we open the bag, and the first flavor that hits is dill. Nothing squeamish for thought, but the taste of dill right in the middle of the slice.
It doesn’t take long before the pickle takes over. And that taste sticks in well. What starts as dill pickles ends up as a real little pickle party. There is a lot of vinegar here.
– I don’t like pickles, but I liked this.
– This one is perhaps better suited to things, than to itself?
The suggestion to put these chips in a burger, for a bit of pickle flavor – and crunch – is immediately taken up for consideration. The same with crushing the chips and using them as breading on fish.
We would also like to dip this in a good sour cream or yoghurt dip. Perhaps a luxury variant with sour cream and roe? You understand where we want to go.
Casting the dice on this is difficult, because here there will be divided opinions. Because while some people’s mouths water when they hear the word pickle, just the thought of it induces vomiting in others.
If you identify mostly with the latter, just steer clear. But if you’re more on the fence, it might happen. Even several of those who are not so enthusiastic about pickles ate until the bag was empty.
Thin, crispy chips
Tastes as promised
Have fun with new flavors
Hits the middle of the pickle trend
A somewhat divisive taste Many people want to eat this for something, rather than for themselves
We appreciate that the manufacturer tries something new, and that they deliver what they promise. However, not everything is true, perhaps especially because the vast majority thought that this would be better for something, not for themselves.
With the proviso that those who have fixed the roll of the dice like pickles, this one lands on an honorable five.
