Year 2023: World Events and Threats – A Look Back at the Past Year

Can anything good be said about the year 2023 in the world? This year, the Western world experienced the collapse of illusions – it turns out that humanity has not yet outgrown its lust for war and destruction. Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russia despite a sharp decline in aid, Azerbaijan took the opportunity to reclaim Nagorno-Karabakh, and Hamas committed a brutal massacre in Israel and then covered up with defenseless Palestinian civilians to save its own skin.

Europe has drawn at least one correct conclusion: the time for dreaming is over, now it is time to think seriously about defense.

In 2023, the sense of threat intensified in the Baltic States. Although we are protected by Article 5 of the NATO Treaty and the US, Canadian and German soldiers stationed on the eastern flank are a kind of security guarantee, it is heard from Ukraine and other countries that Russia is considering a new aggression after about five years, and in some Russian circles, at least at the level of suggestion, also the Baltic States.

The future is also being thought about elsewhere. This year it has become clear that both the EU and NATO are member states that are ready to act against the interests of all other allies for their own benefit. Elsewhere, elections are coming up: in the case of the USA, politics could change 180 degrees after them, while in Russia they will not change anything, only allow Vladimir Putin’s regime to spread its tentacles even more, both in Russia itself and abroad.
