The Young Boys can still dream of taking part in the Champions League. They won the first leg against Galatasaray at home 3-2.

Fingers crossed for YB. At the very fingers of Abdülkerim Bardakci. The Galatasaray defender threw himself into Darian Males’ shot in the 83rd minute and seemingly bravely parried it for a corner. But before this was done, the referee grabbed his ear, ran to the sidelines and looked at the scene again. Poor Bardakci, who was then sent off with a red-yellow card, hit the ball lightly with his fingers, but with his arm outstretched.

Filip Ugrinic didn’t miss the chance and scored to make it 3-2. YB pointed to a victory that seemed to be slipping away already. And that could be in the end worth millions.

Monteiro gets a double…

The game was an ups and down of emotions. At half-time, many Wankdorf fans may have rubbed their eyes in surprise as the home team went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead. Joël Monteiro scored twice. When it came to goals, Galatasaray’s defense was surprisingly easy to get around. In the 3rd minute, Ebrima Colley disrupted the rally and Filip Ugrinic passed on the other side, where Monteiro had plenty of space. In injury time in the first half, goalkeeper Marvin Keller deflected a goal kick from Silvère Ganvoula, who headed it and once again Monteiro was alone in front of goal. It was the first double for the 25-year-old. These were his first goals of the season and his first international goal.

The fact that Keller was between the posts at this stage was due to the fact that Captain David von Ballmoos was out due to injury. He had already injured his shoulder in the 12th minute in a collision with Mauro Icardi. Von Ballmoos gritted his teeth for another 20 minutes before the 29-year-old made way for his team-mate, who was seven years his junior. Keller, who was playing only his seventh competitive game for YB, showed no signs of worry and was able to excel on several occasions as a result.

…Batsuhuayi too

In the 66th minute, Keller was powerless. After a corner, the ball landed at the second post, where Michy Batshuayi, who had just been substituted, hid and scored a goal for the Turks with his first touch of the ball . And just six minutes later, the 30-year-old was forgotten again. After a good stop, Batshuayi slotted the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area to make it 2-2.

The trend seemed to have turned, the Turkish fans in Bern created a great atmosphere. However, YB showed character and continued to look for the offense – with the famous prize at the end. Galatasaray substitute goalkeeper Günay Güvenc, who came on at half-time for Fernando Muslera, who was also injured, could not stop the penalty.

The Bernese now have time to prepare for the away game in Istanbul; the club had won the weekend’s league game (1:3 against Servette). The Turks, on the other hand, are back in action in the competition on Saturday, although the home game against Gaziantep does not include other travel expenses. Next Tuesday, 50,000 fans will decide who will continue in the Champions League and who will have to settle for the Europa League.
