Australian Open, 4th round, women
Azarenka – Yastremskaya – 0:2 (6:7, 4:6)
Noskova – Svitolina – 0:0 (3:0, refusal)
Yastremskaya defeated former world number one Victoria Azarenka in two sets. The Ukrainian was the first to make her move – with a break and successful serves of her own, she led 3:1 by the middle of the opening set. However, the Belarusian responded with two breaks and seized the lead (4:3).
However, towards the end of the set, there was a new exchange of points on someone else’s serves. For example, Yastremskaya scored two breaks. In the first case, she beat Azarenka to zero, and in the second she won back two set points and sent the game into a tiebreaker. There, the Ukrainian tennis player put the finishing touches on the veteran (8:6).
But the Belarusian started the second set powerfully. She managed to lead 3:0, but subsequently slept through Yastremskaya’s comeback. The Ukrainian took 5 (!) games in a row and, after a short break, calmly converted the advantage on her own serve. She managed to close the game, and with it the match, in 54 minutes.
Svitolina was unable to support Yastremskaya’s song. She lost three games from the start of the match with Linda Noskova. The Czech woman’s unexpected jerk received a logical explanation. The Ukrainian tennis player experienced back pain and, due to health problems, refused to continue the match.
So, Yastremskaya joined Marta Kostyuk in the quarter finals of the Australian Open. The first rival will be Svitolina’s unwitting offender – Noskova. The match is tentatively scheduled for January 23.
