“Yannick Noah, between you and me”. This is the name of the podcast’Europe 1 dedicated to Yannick Noah. In the 9 episodes (7 are currently available), the last French winner of Roland Garros confides in this victory which marked history but also on more intimate subjects such as his African roots, his mentor Arthur Ashes or the role of his father in his life.
And not only since he also addresses the impact of fame on him. “We live it as we want, but above all as we can. There were times when notoriety weighed on me (…), bothered me, so much so that I wanted to go into exile, I settled in the United States because I couldn’t deal with this constant stuff”, thus confided the former tennis player who now takes an uncompromising look at certain things done in the past. “I agreed to go and do some shows that seemed to me to be such empty shows, where we pretended to laugh, where we were asked stupid questions. Sometimes I felt like I was on the edge prostitution”he blurted out.
Looking back, he keeps a bitter memory of his time in the Star Academy: “It was very painful because I really felt like a whore, to be there to sell a product (…) It was a mandatory step because it was a magnificent promotion of my project. But I was not well”, admitted that he was finally reassured by the feedback from the public, in particular from sick children hospitalized, in the face of his passage which was an opportunity for him to discuss the associations and causes he supported. “So the Star Academy, that I redid afterwards, I had a reason to do it. It made sense of it all.”
In this podcast, Yannick Noah also discusses the impact of his mother, Marie-Claire Noah, on his life and the way he approached fame. “Once you have the car, the girls, the best table, it’s two minutes. I didn’t feed myself at all on that, it wasn’t my education or my trip. (…) Success is interesting if it benefits the other (…) She gave me this dimension that I live until today”explained touched Yannick Noah.
