Major League Baseball (MLB) returns to action this Monday night when the New York Yankees face the Kansas City Royals in Game 2 of their Division Series in the American League, a game in which they promise to maintain the emotions at the limit with both rivals looking for a ticket to the next Championship Series.
New York and Kansas City resume action at Yankee Stadium after a day of rest and they do so with the Bombers trying to take an important lead in the match, while the Royals will try to make a statement to return home with the series tied.
How do the Yankees and Royals get to today’s game?
The opening game between Kansas City and New York lived up to expectations, full of twists, surprises and unexpected heroes. The sold-out crowd in the Bronx added to the atmosphere, although Royals manager Mike Quatraro said he didn’t think it affected his pitching staff, which issued an uncharacteristic eight walks.
But don’t tell Gleyber Torres. The Yankees second baseman said the crowd was especially loud in Game 1, and the home team hopes that same atmosphere will make a difference in Game 2.
Cole Ragans couldn’t have been more impressive in his postseason debut last Tuesday against the Orioles, when he pitched six scoreless innings before leaving early with cramps in his left calf. Ragans said at the time that he didn’t want to push himself when he felt the cramps because he wants to pitch well into October, and now he’ll get a second chance against the Yankees on Monday.
Ragans made one start against New York this season and allowed two runs (a two-run homer to Soto) in six innings at Yankee Stadium on September 11.
Carlos Rodón (16-9, 3.96 ERA) enters the postseason having made a career-high 32 starts this year, bouncing back from a dismal debut campaign with the Yankees. Rodón was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two starts against the Royals this season. He has appeared in two previous playoff games (one start) with the White Sox in 2020 and 2021, when he allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings.
