Jon Heyman del New York Post predicts that the Yankees are willing to pursue Justin Verlander and this impacts how far they can go in making the qualifying offer to Jameson Taillon.
After the 2022 ALCS debacle, the New York Yankees face a significant challenge ahead of next season, amid growing fan discontent.
Justin Verlander is likely to win the third Cy Young Award of his career this year. In 2022 he had a 1.75 ERA, the best of his career. The extent to which the Yankees pursue him could influence whether or not they are interested in re-signing Taillon. Heyman believes that the New York franchise “still likes” the 39-year-old right-handed pitcher. He wrote:
“The Yankees loved the idea of importing Justin Verlander last winter, and offered the right-hander $25 million. … They could try again, assuming Verlander opts out, but they don’t necessarily like his chances.”
Coming off a season in which he tied his career high with 14 wins, the 30-year-old will be available for free agency this offseason.
According to Heymanit would make a lot of sense for the Yankees to make the qualifying offer to Taillon.
“Although Taillon will not receive $19.65 million per year on a long-term deal, he is in the group of pitchers who may look good to current teams on a one-year, $19.65 million contract.”
Heyman anticipates Taillon will sign a four-year, $60 million deal, while The Athletic’s Jim Bowden predicts the right-hander will sign a four-year, $70 million deal. Given the price, it’s also possible that Taillon pitched his last game with the Yankees.
Last season, the Yankees offered Verlander a one-year, $23 million contract. But he signed a similar contract with the Astros that also had an opt-out for 2023.
