Yankees on alert for Gerrit Cole’s physical discomfort

New York Yankees star right-hander Gerrit Cole put his team on alert after being forced to abandon his start on Monday against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field, in a game that ended in an 8-4 victory for Aaron Boone’s team.

The 2023 Cy Young Award winner felt discomfort in his right calf while warming up before what was to be his seventh inning of work, and the team later said it was a cramp in that area and that he would be “monitored and re-evaluated” on Tuesday.

It should be noted that, during his first six innings of work, Cole had looked great, limiting the Rangers’ batters to just one run. In addition, he retired the last nine batters he faced and also finished his work with nine strikeouts and one walk.

However, it should not be overlooked that Cole had not looked as good this year as he did in those first six innings. And after missing the first 75 games of the season, the right-hander returned posting a 3.65 ERA in 13 starts, which while good, is far from what was a 2023 that ended with the Yankees pitcher winning the first Cy Young of his career.
