“Obviously, there’s no room to throw things on the field in that situation,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said in a postgame news conference.
“We definitely don’t want to put anyone at risk,” he said. “I like seriousness, but we can’t throw things on the field.”
Tensions rose late in the match. Cleveland went 4-3 in the ninth inning with two outs, New York’s Isia Kiner-Falefa doubled over Cleveland’s Emmanuel Klaas, tying the game and sending left fielder Steven Guan into the wall as he chased the ball.
When a trainer came out to check on Kwan, the outfielder climbed over the Miles Straw fence and confronted the Yankees fans.
“I think Miles is sticking up for his team,” Cleveland coach Terry Francona told reporters after the game. “The baby is bleeding. We’re testing him for a concussion. I think the emotions are a bit out of control.”
In the next game, Klaip Torres singled out the game and was able to see a group of unruly Yankees fans throwing trash on the field, including beer cans. Officials from Balpark and both departments descended on the field to defuse tension.
“I don’t think people can throw things at our players on the field anyway,” Francona said. “That’s never okay.”
