NEW YORK — Aaron Judge became the first player in Yankees history with two three-homer games in a season, and New York beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-1 on Friday.
The Diamondbacks saw their five-game winning streak snapped. Their lead over the Chicago Cubs in the fight for the second of three available wild card spots for the playoffs in the National League was reduced to one game.
Arizona fell to 1-7 against New York teams this season, after losing six of seven against the Mets.
Judge hit a three-run homer in the third inning and a two-run homer in the fifth off rookie starter Brandon Pfaadt (2-9). The slugger hit his third home run in the seventh inning, with no men on the paths against Slade Cacconi.
It was Judge’s second three-homer game in his career. Both have arrived in the last month.
He also achieved it on August 23, at home against Washington, for New York to end a nine-game losing streak, the worst it has had since 1982.
Luke Weaver (3-5) took his first win against the Yankees. Dominican Jhony Brito received Christian Walker’s 31st home run but pitched three and a third innings to earn his first save.
For the Diamondbacks, the Dominicans Ketel Marte 4-1, Geraldo Perdomo 3-2. Cuban Lourdes Gurriel 4-0. Venezuelan Gabriel Moreno 2-0.
For the Yankees, Dominican Estevan Florial was 2 for 5 with one run scored and one RBI. The Venezuelans Gleyber Torres 4-0, Oswaldo Cabrera 4-1 with one scored, Oswald Peraza 4-2 with two scored.
