NEW YORK – Yankee Stadium will open Friday as a mass vaccination center for residents of the Bronx, one of the counties hardest hit by COVID-19, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor of New York confirmed Wednesday. New York City Bill de Blasio.
The site will be reserved only for Bronx residents who are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. To receive the vaccine they must do so by appointment and 15,000 appointments will be available during the first week and the numbers are expected to rise, officials said.
“It is very clear that African American, Latino and low-income communities have been the hardest hit by COVID-19 and the Bronx is no exception,” Governor Cuomo said. “Our efforts to target vaccines in places with higher positivity rates have been working not only to keep the infection rate low, but to help ensure fairness in our vaccine distribution process and open a mass vaccination site in Yankee Stadium, the Bronx’s most iconic landmark, is the perfect solution to help this county defeat COVID-19 once and for all. “
The opening of this new mass vaccination center, thanks to a partnership between New York State, New York City, the New York Yankees, SOMOS Community Care and the New York National Guard, will help address and mitigate the continued impact of COVID-19 in The Bronx, including positivity rates in nearby communities and promoting equitable distribution of the vaccine, even in the borough’s hardest hit neighborhoods.
Bronx residents interested in scheduling appointments should visit Somosvaccinations.com or call 1-833-SomosNY. Yankee Stadium will operate from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, seven days a week.
“This mega site shows what our effort to vaccinate everyone is all about, driven by equity,” said Mayor de Blasio. “Yankee Stadium has always been known for its World Series banners, but now it will be recognized as a place where people in the surrounding Bronx community can get the vaccine doses they need and deserve. It is about justice and defense of the neighborhoods most affected by COVID-19 ”.
