Yamaha is one of the first manufacturers to equip its AV receivers 2020 with an HDMI 2.1 interface. The new models RX-A8, RX-A6, RX-A4 and RX-A2 thus support 8K / 60p video signals, ALLM, QMS and VRR.

TV manufacturers are slowly starting to integrate the HDMI 2.1 interface into their 4K and 8K televisions and with the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X the first players with HDMI 2.1 connection are also emerging on the horizon. Actually the perfect time to launch an AV receiver with HDMI 2.1. The AV manufacturers are a bit hesitant on this point – except Yamaha. The AV receiver lineup for the current year was already presented behind closed doors at CES 2020. The RX-A8, RX-A6, RX-A4 and RX-A2 Aventage models are said to be among the first devices to be equipped with the new interface.

No new models have been officially announced by Yamaha, but the leaked images speak, which for the most part come from a YouTube video by the Canadian electronics retailer “Maison Adam”. The video was removed, possibly due to the information under NDA.

HDMI 2.1 with VRR, ALLM, QMT and QMS

Among other things, slides from Yamaha’s presentation were published. These not only reveal the new design of the Yamah AV receivers, but also give us an overview of the most important features of the HDMI 2.1 interface. Thanks to Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Quick Frame Transport (QFT) and Quick Media Switching (QMS), the AV centers are perfectly prepared for the upcoming generation of consoles. QFT is intended to reduce the input delay for gaming and VR applications, while QMS ensures that the change of image sources, resolutions, frame rates and HDR formats take place without interruption (black screen).

In addition to HDMI 2.1, the Yamaha 2020 models (8K / 60p support) are also equipped with Surround AI. Digital sound processing with artificial intelligence is designed to analyze and optimize digital sound signals from films and films. So he becomes sound focus e.g. set to the relevant decisive element at intervals of 200 milliseconds. This is supposed to give surround sound tracks more “depth”. The support of 3D sound in Dolby Atmos and DTS: X format is of course mandatory. There may even be support for the new DTS: X Pro. In addition, all important HDR formats HLG, HDR10, Dolby Vision and HDR10 + are supported.

Entry-level models RX-V6 & RX-V4

Yamaha has of course proudly moved its “Boliden” into the focus of the presentation, but will also supply AV beginners with new devices. Among other things, the RX-V4 (5 channels) and RX-V6 (7 channels) were introduced. However, the two models will have to do without the highlight feature – the HDMI 2.1 interface.
