Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The new leader of Hamas, Political Bureau Chief Yahya Sinwar, was almost captured by the Israeli military. This happened in the Gaza tunnels earlier this year.
According to the Commander of the IDF’s 98th Division, he and his troops were “minutes” away from capturing Sinwar. However, he managed to escape.
“We’re almost there,” said General Dan Goldfus in a lengthy interview in local media Channel 12announced on Thursday (15/8/2024).
“We were in the compound. We reached the underground station. It was hot there,” he said.
He also said that he and his soldiers found a lot of money there. There is ‘still hot’ coffee there too.
“Weapons are scattered everywhere,” he said.
“Minutes, really,” he says.
Israel’s war in Gaza has been going on since October. Referring to the Turkish media Anadolu, a total of 39,929 Palestinians were killed in attacks with 92,240 people injured.
Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu often says that Israel’s victory is in sight. But on Monday, about 100 Israeli security officials said they were far from defeated.
“In the last few days, we have been hit by several statements from senior military officers that victory is in sight and that it is possible to move to the level of targeted attacks,” said a letter signed by about 100 officers to Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi.
“Those of us who come from the field know very well that the situation is still far from winning,” he said.
Yahya Sinwar replaced Ismail Haniyeh who died in Teheran, Iran, after an assassination operation believed to have been directed by the Mossad. This enraged Iran and its proxies and vowed to retaliate against Israel, which raised fears of a larger war in the region.
