Israel has taken out of the way the “mass murderer” Yahya Shinuar, as Hamas leader Benjamin Netanyahu called him, who hastened to address the people and clarify that “the work before us is not finished.”
The Israeli military has released drone footage it says shows Sinwar’s final moments.
As if out of an action movie, the Hamas leader sits alone in a damaged apartment in Gaza, the walls flattened by shelling. Everything around him is covered in dust. Sitting in a chair, his head and face covered with a scarf, he looks like a ghost. With his right arm seriously injured, the video shows him throwing a wooden board in the direction of the approaching drone. Then he drops dead.

When the video was taken, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said that it was initially not realized that it was Sinuar, but an ordinary fighter.
The military, the Guardian reported, then fired an additional missile into the building, causing it to collapse and kill him. The Hamas leader was found with a bulletproof vest, grenades and 40,000 shekels ($10,707).
“He tried to escape and our forces neutralized him,” Hagari said.
Photos circulating online show the body of a man who looks like Sinuar with an open head wound, dressed in military clothing, half-buried in the rubble of a destroyed building.

They believed Sinuar was hiding in a tunnel
In the final months of his life, Sinwar, the main architect of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that sparked the Gaza war, appears to have stopped using phones and other communication equipment that would have allowed Israel’s intelligence services to track him down .
Israeli officials believed he was hiding in one of the vast tunnels Hamas dug under Gaza over the past two decades. But as more and more tunnels were uncovered by Israeli troops, even these were no guarantee that Sinuar would escape capture.
