They are therefore eight women, out of the imagination ofEva Offredo. Each, whose life has been revealed to us since childhood, exercises a rare profession characteristic of Japanese civilization. Tsuyu, for example, cultivates buckwheat, essential for making noodles. room. Shikiri is a wrestler of sumo, Wan Wan is a cervolist painter, Moso artificer … How and why did they come to practice these activities?

Each route is told by the menu. An ideal opportunity to present entire sections of Japanese culture. Geography, gastronomy, vocabulary, everyday life in general: the details abound and fascinate. The documentary aspect of the work, which is at the same time a children’s album, an illustrated book and a comic strip, is solid but never off-putting.

Poetry and sensitivity are not neglected, however. The portraits of the eight women are fine and can lead to identification. These Japanese women assume the originality of their lives and their unexpected place in a very patriarchal society. They are models of freedom, will, fulfillment, but also of simplicity and humility.

Each has the right to its color, soft but straightforward. Linked to the themes developed in each chapter, these colors reinforce the atmosphere of joyful and playful discovery. The drawing, with a simple and sharp black line, follows the same direction. Extremely readable, it refers as much to the contemplation of Zen gardens as to the signage that the Japanese love in their daily environment.

Full of true information but leaving a good part to the imagination and to the narration, Yahho Japon! makes you want to travel to the Land of the Rising Sun to meet – if they existed – these eight independent women drawn by Éva Offredo.
