Xylitol: A Powerful Weapon Against Tooth Decay and Bad Breath

American dental magazine, ‘Dental Economics’ recently reported

Korea Food Communication Forum 1 An article published in an American dental journal stating that xylitol, widely used as a chewing gum material, is very effective in removing Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), a bacterium that causes tooth decay and bad breath.

According to the Korea Food Communication Forum (KOFRUM) on the 31st, Dental Economics, an American dental magazine, published an article titled ‘Integrated treatment, xylitol, and education to help (dental) patients’ and said, “Xylitol is effective in preventing tooth decay.” Besides prevention, it offers many benefits to the teeth, such as reducing plaque and increasing salivation.”

According to the article, xylitol is one of the popular ingredients used in chewing gum, toothpaste and skin care products, and is particularly effective in reducing the harmful bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg). Pg is known as a pathogen that causes periodontitis, atherosclerosis, inflammatory Alzheimer’s disease, insulin resistance, preeclampsia and other systemic diseases. Pg usually adheres to epithelial cells and invades into cells. Pg is a systemic pathogen found in many human cells, even nerve cells. Entering human macrophages, Pg increases nitric oxide production and dilates capillaries. This provides nutrients to infected cells and allows pathogens to spread throughout the body.

Brushing, flossing, or professional mouthwash alone cannot completely remove Pg. Xylitol is a kind of prebiotics (food for probiotics) that prevents Pg from attaching and entering the oral cavity and preventing Pg from proliferating in the mouth or penetrating into the bloodstream to cause systemic diseases.

Xylitol is a natural sweetener alternative to sugar and is known as a cheap and ideal dental health method for children or people with difficult treatment because it tastes good and does not cause spoilage. Another advantage is that it can be easily supplemented with xylitol made from chewing gum. According to a research paper published in the journal ‘Clinical Oral Investigations’ in 2022, xylitol gum chewed three times a day significantly reduced the number of dental caries in patients with few side effects. According to the Korea Food Communication Forum, xylitol mints, candies, toothpaste, mouthwash, and sprays that can be easily used for daily oral disease prevention and management are also on the market.
