Next weekend the XXI Fira del Caragol will take place in Sant Jordi. The little animal will be the star of an established carnival that attracts many visitors to the small town each year, drawn by the activities and the irresistible smell of the food being prepared. The program includes a variety of events and will strengthen the spirit of the village again this year.
On Saturday (05/20/2023) at 4 p.m. registration begins for the participants of the Curses de Caragols, who start half an hour later. In the evening, after the Mostra de Ball de Bot of the Agrupació Mandalmar, the Nit Gastronómica Caragolera takes place, with a wide and varied range of dishes. The event will take place from 9:30 p.m. and will be accompanied by the band The Kings of New Orleans.
On Sunday the event begins at 9am with the Cercavila of the Xeremiers de Sant Jordi. At 9.30 the Fira is officially opened with the sale and tasting of snails and traditional products, an exhibition of local animal breeds, the exhibition of a typical mill of Pla de Sant Jordi, a spectacular ensaimada of two meters in diameter and various workshops for children and Familys. In the afternoon there is a popular ballada and at 7pm the party ends with the Corredrac de Sant Jordi.
Now in its 21st year, Fira del Caragol is one of the oldest themed events on the island. As every year, it is organized by the Club Prat de Catí, founded in 1998 and counting more than 80 members.
The Prat de Catí Club aims to keep alive the traditional culture of a village on the outskirts of a big city like Palma. They are usually very active in tasks such as guiding, preserving toponymy, gastronomy and archaeological heritage. The Fira was born out of the need to “justify all this, recovering the spirit of the village and stopping the decay of the area”.
