Xolos come back and send Santos to last place in Liga MX

Mexico City. A day after clarifying their tax situation and denying alleged breaches with the Tax Administration Service, Santos returned to Liga MX activity with a 3-1 defeat in their visit to Tijuana. The team from Laguna turned the page on their early elimination in the Leagues Cup and crashed again with defensive errors that turned out to be devastating.

Honduran Anthony Lozano put the team led by Ignacio Ambriz (14) ahead, after referee Maximiliano Quintero was the protagonist of the most controversial action since the start. Just in the first advance of Xolos, Argentine defender Santiago Núñez knocked down forward José Raúl Zúñiga from behind with a tackle on his supporting ankle. Quintero went to the VAR to review the play, but it took more than six minutes to determine that it was a “clean” intervention.

When the space moves and easy passes came back to their side, the team led by Juan Carlos Osorio finally managed to wake up. A breakaway by midfielder Efraín Álvarez on the right flank, combined with a deflection by Argentine full-back Bruno Amione, led to the 1-1 with the shot by the Mexican-American (28).

During the extra minutes following the VAR problem, Xolos turned things around after a shot by Colombian Zúñiga, who was left alone in the area thanks to a defensive error by Santiago Núñez (45+8). In the second half, Núñez himself lost his head again and received a red card for a hard, untimely tackle.

The numerical disparity created more space in the Laguna area, a situation that debutant Jaime Álvarez, trained in the lower categories of the border club, took advantage of to make it 3-1 on a counterattack (90+5). The defeat left Santos in last place in the League with one point in five games, while the Tijuana team reached 10 points in fifth place.
