The candidate of the Frente Amplio por México for the presidency, Xóchitl Gálvez, spoke with Univision 41 and touched on different topics such as the fight against insecurity, her vision on immigration and even her opinion on the Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Below, we present some of their responses on the most relevant topics.
Would seek to control immigration on the southern border of Mexico
Xóchitl Gálvez assured that if she became President of Mexico she would seek to control the trafficking of immigrants across the southern border.
“It is a complicated border. Geographically it is not so simple. We are not asking for a wall, nor do I believe in walls, but I do believe that there has to be enough personnel, which today there is not to do the immigration procedures, so that the people who go to Mexico enter in a legally controlled manner, so that we know where they are. “How long are they staying, if they are going to go to the United States, how long are they going to stay in Mexico.”
“There has to be order, there is absolute disorder and I do believe that it is much better to control the southern border and from there know who is entering Mexico. And I insist, we could see how we are a third country, sure, but cooperating, because today we are so in exchange for nothing. There are no resources for migrants, the Mexican government does not provide money, the United States government does not provide money, migrants live in parks, in the streets, and many Mexicans are also angry with what is happening,” she said.
Fighting insecurity in Mexico: Xóchitl assures that hugs failed
Gálvez described the current government’s strategy to improve security as a failed attempt.
“First off, I’m not going to hug criminals. This strategy of hugs, not bullets, has been a failure. Criminals are empowered and do not respect the law. I am going to apply the law, I am going to provide resources so that Mexico returns to being a calm and safe country,” he said.
“There are six delicate, serious problems. One is drug trafficking, fentanyl, another is arms trafficking, another is money laundering, human trafficking is beginning to be a problem as serious as drug trafficking,” he added.
“The issue of trafficking is an issue that we do not talk about, but it exists, organ trafficking… Indeed, in the United States 100,000 people die a year, many of them young people, but in Mexico the main cause of death among young people of 15 24 years is intentional homicide.”
“In Mexico they are killing young people. It is said that with the weapons that enter from the United States. So I think that both countries have a serious, serious problem that we have to face and solve,” he added.
Your opinion on Donald Trump
Regarding the Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, and his statements against immigrants, the Alliance for Mexico candidate assured that if both were winners in their respective races, she would seek to have a good relationship.
“Finally he tries to protect the country. I understand it, but immigrants are also an opportunity for the United States and for Mexico. I think we have to explain what it means to close the border. It seems to me that it is technically impossible. There is too much commercial exchange, there is a flow of people who come to work here and from here to there things are going well for us,” he noted.
“What I believe is that we have to agree, we have to get to work to solve this serious problem. It will not be resolved with back and forth. Let’s work to find a way for immigrants to enter to work in a documented manner. “Many of them don’t want to live in the United States.”
“Criminals can enter this migratory flow, and the United States does not suit them; there are people of good faith, but there are also people who do not come in good faith,” he said.
Is Trump xenophobic? he was asked.
“Well yes, there is a certain xenophobia, we should not encourage it. I rather believe that many of the migrants who come to the United States come to work and there is a need for labor here. “That’s why it comes, because there is a labor shortage.”
“What I want is for Mexico to grow economically, for people to stay in Mexico, for Mexico to give its citizens opportunities and not have to leave the country. And those who are passing through may also be able to find an opportunity from Mexico,” he added.
AMLO projects would continue
Although she does not agree with several of them, the candidate of the Frente Amplio por México said that she would continue several projects of the current president, if she became president.
“The mega pharmacy is not the way to supply medicines, that is not going to work. That is destined to fail, although I don’t want it, but we can get AIFA going,” he said.
“Many communications to the airport still need to be completed, the next stages need to be built and this is a project that could work well, it just needs to be finished.”
“The Mayan train must be investigated why it cost four times its original value. It was going to cost 120 billion and is costing 500 billion. It’s not finished either. I think that part of it can work well to transport goods to the eastern United States. The refinery is another project that is not finished, which was already inaugurated 18 months ago. “I’m not a fan of the refinery, but it needs to be finished and up and running.”
